A few times I have come across somebody searching for a marriage during WW1 where the searcher is assuming that the marriage took place in the area where the groom came from. But if you are searching for such a marriage, or helping somebody look for one, please bear in mind that if he was the sort of age to be getting married for the first time, he was very likely serving in the forces and could have got married wherever he was stationed. Sometimes these marriages will be in the 'overseas' section on 1837 online. Sometimes just in a different part of England or Wales from where you were expecting. Or even in Scotland or Ireland. Kate. |

very good point Kate........... Whan I first began this lark I looked for the rumoured first marriage of my grandmother. I ignored one in Lancashire as she lived in Middlesex. It took me over 15 years to recheck the GRO indexes, by which time I had a much better idea of the frequency of names (hers was not common) and also had learned the name of the groom.....and there it was all the time!! The groom was stationed at Fulwood barracks in Preston, Lancs. Merry |

It is worth remembering that marriages about 1912 onwards the parties might be a lot older than you expect and marrying to claim the married couple's rate of old age pension. It is worth thinking who would have organised the wedding. I had great problems finding my Somerset grandmother's marriage to someone from Gloucestershire. As her mother had died the wedding was organised by her eldest sister who was living in London. |
