Morning all you nice ppl ! I've found a possible rellie Thomas Orton born 1843 East Rudham Norfolk in 1881 in Bolton Lancs with wife and family. The eldest child was born St. Helens Lancs. The wife named Ann was born Cumberland. I've looked for a marriage for them and the only possible is Thomas Orton to Ann Mullen in 1872 South Shields Durham. How likely is it to be the right Thomas Orton do you think? I mean Durham is the other side of the country isn't it. Cant find any more Thomas Ortons marrying an Ann around that time. Carole xx |

Could be, but don't forget that if you only have her name from the census it could be that Ann was her middle name but she was known by it. You might be best to get the birth certificate of one of the children to see what the mother's maiden name was. Kate. |

Yes Kate, I should do that. It's just I need so many and funds won't allow at the moment! It doesn't seem very likely that they would marry in Durham I don't think, I can't find any connection to there. Thanks for reply. Carole xx |

Huge quantities of Norfolk men went up to South Shields. Most seem to have stayed there, but plenty moved on. One man in my family went up to Kendal, then came down to Hull. You would need a child's birth certificate to confirm mother's maiden name, but people weren't afraid to travel. |

Carole they could have married later than you think. The info on the 1881 census shows that the oldest child Thomas aged 7 was born in Reading and the youngest Mary aged 4 was born in Bolton. Maybe Ann was not Thomas's mother, have you found Thomas senior in 1871? Georgina. |

Georgina No I cant find Thomas Snr in 71, I've found an Ann Mullen tho who was a servant unmarried age 27 from Stockdalewath in Cumberland. In 81 young Thomas was born Reading but in 91 he was born St. Helens! Thanks for replies, I know they travelled about a lot, I will have to send for cert. I think. Carole xx |
