My husband had a Great Uncle who lived and died in America. He never married and is a bit of a mystery. Is it possible to apply for his Social Security Number. This way I could find out where he died and when etc. Jan in Oz |

Jan.... Millions, but not all, Social Security Numbers are listed online. To start you can check the Social Security Death Index which you can check here: http://ssdi.rootsweb(.)com/ Remember to remove the ( ) from the address. There is a link on the site that will explain what the SSDI is, when it came into exhistance, and what information can be had when you apply for a copy. It's a great genealogy tool! Judy PS: Only SS numbers of people who have pasted on are listed. |

Nudge for people - like me - who didn't realise how useful this can be have just spent an hour on this & found a couple of rellies birth & death dates just by looking at the index. (Does help if its a fairly unusual surname!) Only has deaths in the latter half of the 20th century, won't show anyone who died earlier. |
