Well thats sorted then off I go down the branches of my main tree trunk, hopefully it may lead back to the main one and fill in the last gaps I have got. At this rate I'll be here for a long time to come! lol wouln't have it any other way really

A few lucky people can turn up at a record office, simply knowing their greatgrandfather's name, and come away a few hours later with an extra three generations and masses of photocopies. This is not the norm. If you know the names of the daughters' husbands, the witnesses on the certificates, the great aunts, everyone's occupations, then you will have a much better chance of success when you do get the opportunity to visit a record office. Absolutely nothing beats the opportunity to handle an original record that your ancestor handled, or was present at its creation. If you wish to sieze that opportunity, then the sooner you get to a record office the better, as increasing numbers of records are microfilmed. But there is no law that says you have to pursue any particular branch of your family. Go for the ones that interest you. Once you are doing things 'because you have to' rather than because you enjoy it, it's time to choose a new hobby.

Unfortunately, the farther back you go, the harder it gets and at some point the trail ends. However, there is hope. By tracking down and posting extended family members on your tree you may attract the attention of one of their decendents. I have been contacted by 3 others who are decended from siblings of my direct line. They had valuable information I didn't and vice versa. As a result, I was able to continue my search and found some 2nd and 3rd cousins I never knew about. Hope you find this useful. Rose

You will find by doing your branches that someone might have info on your main tree so yes it is a good idea to go into those branches. Goodluck

I'm addicted to trying to find out all the sidelines of the tree. My main line going back have all got the same name and although Im sure they were all very different in character, seeing the same names over and over again does get a lil bit boring, lol. Its strange that certain people on the tree seem to draw me to them to find out more. Maybe Im just strange, lol. Bex x

I have gone as far back in my tree and my husbands on our direct lines as I can via the internet, the next step would be to go to the archives and view parish reg's etc, but haven't go the time to be honest! So what do Ido now as I'm addicted to this? Do i now do the branches off the main family and go for their spouses and their spouses families? I don't really want to be seen to be adding names for the sake of it, but wondered what the rest of you do when you get to this stage? Joanne
