I suppose technically the certificate does cost £4 when you order it from the GRO, because that is how much they refund you if they don't send you a certificate (because either they can't find one to match the references you give them or you have specified an extra check that doesn't match the cert). So the other £3 must be the cost of finding the certificate and doing any checks. But you do have to pay a total of £7 to get a certificate! Kate. |

I don't think there is anywhere where you can buy birth or death certs for less than £7. If there was we would all be doing it!! Marriage records can sometimes be traced via local County Record Offices, but if they are not local to you then that's no help as the cost would be prohibitive. If you can call into the right County Record office you might be able to get a copy of a marriage cert really cheaply, but you would have to know where the marriage took place (which church). Obviously Reg Office marriage certs are only available in the same way as birth and death certs. Merry |

Ok few mistake on my part Family Records Centre - Not Family History. And i've ordered from the GRO before but i'm sure i have seen it somewhere that you could order some certs for about £4 each and either pick them up or get them posted to you when they where ready. I have no idea where i read this though. I'm asking cause i'm down in London in May and i dont have a lot of English relatives but the ones i do have i would like certs for and i thought if it was possibly cheaper then...well i'd get them. Must have thought it was the familyrecords centre but so far i've not found anything like that on the website. Thanks John, Tracy Mhairi |

There are local records offices which have parish records, but that's as close as you can get to a cert. For marriages, the cert s just a copy of the register (from 1837) but births/deaths are not there, only baptisms/burials. Do you mean the GRO? I think the price is meat to be the same, but the lead time is currently at around 4 weeks for delivery. |

There are no places in Edngland and Wales where you can view certificates is there? Like you dont just get the index but the actual certificate. I dont think so but i'm just checking. Plus when you order certs in person from the Family History Centre (have i got the right place? the one in london) its cheaper and you can have them posted to you at a later date? Thanks Mhairi |
