Have you looked at the Getting Started pages here on GR? You should find a link on your GR Home page. That should give you a selection of ideas for making headway. The usual (and very sound) advice is to start by getting as much info out of your own memory and your family's memory as you can. It's sometimes surprising how much there is. You'll need to check it, but it tells you where to look to start with. After that you can work your way back (all being well) to about 1837/1840 by alternating buying certificates (which shouldn't cost more than £7 if you have the full GRO reference) and tracing the family on the various censuses (every ten years: 1901 is the most modern to be available and 1841 is the earliest to have much useful info for genealogy purposes). The earliest of the Registration certificates (Jun-Sep 1837) and the 1841 census should give you some info to go back a bit earlier. There's also the IGI (International Genealogical Index) which has transcriptions of Parish Register entries (as reliable as any transcription - i.e. always check the original!) and personal submissions which may be pure guesswork but are a starting point for where to look for your own data. And here on the Tips board are lots of helpful folk. There's also a thread-search function so you can see if anyone's already asked your question and got some useful replies. And there are some Tips for Newbies' threads. Christine
