In 1987 I found my great grandfather Joseph Rowbottom (or Rowbotham) on the 1881 census at Caythorpe in Lincolnshire with wife Emily (nee Smith) and Children Charles, John and Kate. I have since been able to follow the family through to the 1891 and 1901 censuses, although they are wrongly indexed. I haven't looked for a death as yet, but it looks to me as if Joseph died in the 1890s. The family is scattered and there is no sign of him on the 1901 census. Working back he married Emily on December 26th 1868 at Barnbygate Chapel in Newark. He was a bachelor and Ag Lab. His father's name on the certificate is William Rowbottom. From the censuses, Joseph appears to have been born at Frieston near Caythorpe in or about 1820. He appears on one earlier census living with his brother, but I cannot find him, or his parents on the 1841. My other lines are keeping me more than busy, but it would be great if someone could come up with some other ideas as to how I might get this line back beyond 1820 - after all there are people on here who have 4,000 names in 3 months (LOL) and I've been going 20 years for less than a tenth of that! Thanks Sheila

hope you don't mind me rearranging your message, but it's hard to read when it's all in one paragraph (GR's brilliant idea that header messages don't need any layout!) Brickwall since 1987! Don't know what you've tried so far but here are some to consider... Free things like FreeBMD and the GRO index images while they're in beta-mode on Ancestry. (I found an 1841 marriage for my husband's Gtx3 g-father. It was his third marriage and the only one after 1837. So it gave me the Gtx4 g-father's name and occupation.) IGI on familysearch.org (although it's not all there at once, they say). Lincolnshire FHS - and there are some useful sites with info online. Google (amazing what that throws up, sometimes!). Just remember to put multi-word items, such as names, into inverted commas so that Google treats them as single items not lots of separate items. A2A Local Record Office Wills, apprenticeship records, removal orders, other court records I expect others will add more. Christine

These might be the siblings of Henry, but no Joseph showing up. Have you every examined the PR's for Caythorpe? My own gg-grandfather's baptism is the only one missing from the IGI from his family, but it's in the PR's all the same! 1. Thanks for your help so far. Have tried all the obvious things over the years as they have become available without success. He makes a guest appearance on the 1861 census living at Caythorpe with his younger brother Henry - both ag labs, but is not on the 1851 or, I am told the 1841. Not sure about the death. Sounds reasonable, so I will definitely keep it in mind, but I always have to be wary of the other Joseph Rowbottom born in Long Bennington about 1820. He's always in the right area at the right time - but I know he's not mine!!! Thanks again Sheila
