Her's one to test your knowledge! My G G Grandmother Maria Mallins(b 1855 ish) came to Ireland from America suposedly as a nanny, ?from Philadelphia,USA sometime in the mid to late 1860's. She married Edward Howley in Dublin in the early 1870's and had at least 4 children there, including my G Grandma Maria Louisa Heatley (nee Howley). Granny ML lived in Belfast then moved to a little village nr. Crumlin to raise her large family and live out her days. Maria Howley, went on to die, in 1922,of an 'cerebral apopleptic' attack at 72 years old (don't you love the old medical terms?) in Glasgow,( why she was in Glasgow I don't know!!!) her death entry reads that G G Granda Howley ( a lithigraphic printer and journeyman) was present at her death, and (glory be) her parents names William Mallins ( a poplin weaver) and Jane Young ( or could be Ewing). Family legend has Maria born in America and part Cherokee indian (she does look indian in her photos) How do I find out about her birth? How do I find out about her parents? Is there ashipping passenger lists for ships arriving to Dublin from America? And what happened to Edward? after the death certificate he just seems to drop of the face of the planet. How's that for a conundrum> Carol

Hi Carol Try http://genealogy.about(.)com/od/united_states/ (Remove brackets) for links and general info on US birth death marriages etc. Ancestry have a lot of information so you could try the record board and ask if anyone with a full delux (!) subscribtion to the site would look for you. No she was definately American, but her father may have been an Irish imigrant to America. I assume she was in Scotland either on holiday or as part of Edwards travels with his work.
