From the Daily Mail on page 41 Saturday 1st April 2006- and I doubt this was an April Fool's joke. Headline: FOUND AFTER 62 YEARS, BODY OF CRASHED SPITFIRE ACE WHO TOOK TEA WITH ROMMEL. The story briefly- The Armed Forces Personnel Administration Agency Tel: 01452 712612 are looking for the family of Desmond Ibbotson who was a pilot in WW2. They know a lot about him from his RAF records but know nothing of his relatives. His Spitfire was shot down in Italy in 1943 near Castel Nuovo, Assisi and has recently been excavated by an Italian historical society. His remains were recovered and have been taken to an Assisi hospital where they remain while the British Embassy try to find any relatives. DESMOND ISSOTSON was born 25 October 1921 in Leeds, and educated in Yorkshire before joining the RAF in 1940. Does any member of GR have the Ibbotson family from Leeds, Yorkshire in their tree? I have no personal interest in this story, it was just a thought that the members of GR might just be able to help to trace Desmond's relatives in the hope that his remains can be re-united with them and his homeland. Thanks in advance for any help Vera from Manchester. |

Lots of Ibbotsons from Leeds coming up on my search..... Looks however as if Desmond was born in Wetherby in the last quarter of 1921 and his mother's maiden name was Parker...There are Parkers from Wetherby coming up on my search... Sure someone will get to the bottom of this one. Sheila |

Hi everybody, Thanks for the inpu, I just hope that word will get round to his family - if there are any. I'll give the AFPAA a ring tomorrow and give them these details. Thanks again Vera |
