I have just found a christening record I was looking for. Mary Margaret lowther, But instead of the surname bring in upper case is is like this <lowther> the rest on the page are LOWTHER, and there is full name of father but only mothers first name, does this mean possibly they wern't married. Sue

Sue No, it means they WERE married (or at least the Vicar thought they were).Mother's name only would be shown if they were not married, except in the most unusual circumstances. I have one instance in my family, in the 1700s, where the parents were not married and both full names are shown against the child's name. This was no doubt because the illegitimate child's grandfather paid the Vicar's stipend! I used to know what the upper case/lower case thingy meant, but I have forgotten - someone else will know, though. Olde Crone

Olde Crone Thanks that sort one thing out, the christening was in 1862 and on the 1871 census head of house is Margaret Barnes, and Mary Margaret Lowther is with stated as daughter, but can't find them with Mary's father William Lowther on any cansus records, thats why I thought they might not be married. Many Thanks for the reply Sue
