In 1851 Could a Wine merchant and say an INN Keeper be classed as the same? I have a Thomas Reeves occ: Inn keeper & Butcher. Looking on 1851......Closest I can come is Wine merchant? As I have no other info regarding Thomas Reeves, apart from possibly being born in Shropshire. Any advice about this please? Lin |

No, they aren't the same job, an innkeeper or publican wouldn't be a wine merchant which would be someone selling wine but not for immediate consumption on the premises. I suppose its possible that someone in the alcoholic drinks trade could turn to another job in the same kind of line though. My husband has a publican who was previously a travelling mineral water salesman, and a cooper who turned beer seller. nell |

As Nell says - it could be he changed jobs - my GGFx2 was a licensed victualler (inn keeper) who became a travelling salesman. |

Heather, Yes I understand but in this case I don't think it was so.......as that is his trade on my gg grandmothers marriage cert in 1847. As I have not found him in 1851, I think he may have died by then? Lin |

Alternatively, she could have been bigging him up. I have a gt gt uncle who put 'provisions merchant' on his marriage cert as his dead father's occupation, when the chap was actually a milk carrier! nell |

Does your Thomas feature in the Historical Directories with a trade and address that might link these people.? Nell I know what you mean. One of my Sussex lot, marrying far away from her folk, in London said that her father was a farmer.... ...... worked on the land, Yes...... Farmer? wishful thinking for that ag. lab. I think. |

Gwynneth, I have Bagshaws Shropshire 1851 but can't find anything in there, will double check of course but at the moment my heads spinning, been at this one all morning since the cert arrived.......gonna need a break soon lol. Don't think she was bigging him up somehow, as was surprised to see her hubby was Butcher too then........maybe thats how they met? could have been working for her father. Hubby came from farming family and eventually farmed 155 acres himself. Lin |

In 1841, was your GG grandmother living at home and if so was her father's job listed? Or Did Thomas leave a Will stating his occupation and naming his daughter?... ( hoping here) |

Gwyneth, gg grandmother married in 1847 7th October. Haven't got around to checking wills yet. This has all been a surprise for me as I had her down with different surname prior to cert arriving?? details are.... Married at parish church of Hanmer Flint. 7/10/1847 William Madeley 27 Butcher Hanmer Flint Father John Madeley Farmer. to ~~ Sarah Reeves 28 Of the same place.. Father Thomas Reeves Inn keeper & Butcher. As I said, William came from farming family.......he went from Butchery to Farming. The witnesses to the ceremonu were Jane Reeves (probably a sister) and William Haycocks. She would have been at home in 1841 but I can't find him on 1851, and have requested a lookup for 1841. Lin |
