A Question about Ad-Aware

Hi Can somebody please explain to me the 'results' page on Ad-Aware. I have used it for some time but do not really understand what i am looking at. After the full scan, if i look at the logbook i get a list of critical objects, open them up and i get a date and 'hits'. What does this actually mean?, i have recently noticed that some of the times these 'hits' seem to occur is when i have not been using my computer, but i have left it on, i was always under the impression that this scan was finding 'spys' on web-sites i was using. But - if im not using the computer at that time, it now doesnt make sense. Mo

Spyware is in your PC - that's why you run the scan there. You acquire it from websites you've visited, but once it has made it your PC that's where it is 24/7! I shouldn't worry too much about the precise details in the Log. Just get rid of the Critical stuff. If you feel that your PC is still not performing well. Try running Ad-aware in safe mode, it might find more. It is also worth remembering that Ad-aware like all anti-spyware progs will only get about 60% of what is about. It is worth running at least one other as well. I use A-squared and Spybot as well as Ad-aware SE Personal. Lx

Hi Mo Ad Aware is a prog that scans your hard drive for spy wear that is put on your computer when you serf the net, 90% of it is harmless but can slow your puter down if you dont get rid of it. It does not stop web sites from dropping it onto your puter, thats why you should run a scan once a week just to clean out the junk. Its best use is in getting rid of the 10% of bad spywear like the *my web search tool bar* and browser hijackers ect. Steve

All the products below are free (some have payable upgrades... but the free versions are adequate for most people) The most important thing is, no matter what you use, make sure it is updated regularly and make sure it does a full scan regularly (at least weekly). Most anti-spyware does not automaticaly update or run, you have to do it yourself. Antivirus AVG Free: http://www.grisoft(.)com/doc/40/lng/ww Firewall ZoneAlarm: http://www.download(.)com/3000-2092-10039884.html Anti-Spyware Spybot: http://www.safer-networking(.)org/en/download/index.html Adaware SE Personal: http://www.download(.)com/3000-2094-10045910.html?legacy=cnet A-squared Free: http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/download/ Spywareblaster: http://www.javacoolsoftware(.)com/spywareblaster.html

Thanks everyone. I will take your advice and download an extra spyware. I cant remember exactly what the address was, but last night i scanned and it came up with 5 criticle items, on looking they were all from something that was like ad-bureau, one item had 15 hits on it, it was also timed at 15.50 when i knew i had been nowhere near my computer, does leaving the computer connected make things worse? Steve Sorry, thought i knew your name but it took a while for the penny to drop!! I am still playing about trying to get rid of these stupid little boxes that keep appearing, i now know how to get rid of them - thanks to daughter. Ctrl+Alt+Delete - end task. But they come back each time i turn computer on. I would love to know what they are and to get rid of them for good, they are something to do with App Tray whatever that means, and window installer.
