On the 1871 census my 3 x ggrandfather William Rancombe born 1830 is recorded as being and i quote 'Chelsea Pensioner Working Gar'. Does this mean that he worked for the chelsea pensioners i.e. looking after there gardens, or was he one?

Not sure but it does sound as if he was working there doesn't it. he would have only been 41. If theyw ere pensioners I think it usually said something like 'out pensioner' or 'in pensioner' (whether living in or not.) Ann Glos

i have an ancestor described as a Chelsea Pensioner aged 37. It has nothing to do with age, they were discharged from the army on medical grounds and given the pension for income. My ancestor was a out pensioner, living on the Isle of Man. Liz

I think i am being a bit dim actually,,, he is living in Hinton Charterhouse in Somerset at the time of the census, so he couldnt have just been working for them. Could he?

I think it means he is a working gardener, but also in receipt of a pension. My gt X 3 grandfather received a Chelsea pension as he lost the sight of an eye and was discharged from the army after serving a very short time. He also worked as an ag lab. nell

ah, I thought you meant he was actually living in the barracks at the time of the census. No I agree with nell, he was a gardener and also a pensioner. Ann Glos
