Hi - can anyone tell me a website, or starting point to try to find out which regiment someone was in? My father served in WW2, no idea as what, which regiment, or anything. All I know is he married in Northallerton,North Yorkshire in 1939, and I 'think' went to Burma. On his return, he had his first child in around 1945/1946, also in Northallerton. Where would he be likely to sign up? Was he most likely enlisted? He would have been around 21/22 when the war started. Thank you for any advice you can give me. |

If he was already in the army when he married, try his marriage cert. My grandad's gives his rank, regiment and service number alongside his usual occupation. Sam x |

If he was serving in the forces when his children where born it would be worth sending for one of the birth certs as it may say on the cert under fathers occupation, which regiment he was in? plus i think Northallerton has a strong association with the Green Howards Roy |

I only found the details of birth & marriage certs yesterday so I plan to send off for them asap. I'll wait to see what they bring me! Exciting stuff. I do hope it says something!! This was my Dad's first marriage and my step brother who died a couple of years before I tried to make contact. Another door closed .... You should always act when you first think about it, and not keep putting it off! Thanks very much for the advice, I'll be back in touch no doubt in a few weeks! |
