Another stepney/whitechapel question??

Can anyone help me please....If somebody died in the Whitechapel Union South Grove, where would they likely be buried, in 1914.......Many thanks Diane

Oh dear. Not an easy one. Central London ran out of burial space in the mid 19th century and cemeteries were opened in the suburbs to solve the problem. Islington and Marylebone had places in Finchley, but there were others as far away as Brookwood in Surrey. Two even had their own railway stations. I don't know about Tower Hamlets area. Perhaps somebody else can help. If you do not get an answer, why not phone the Tower Hamlets council. They should hold the records, or know where they are. Good Luck Jim

Can't help with your precise question, but you might find this page about Whitechapel workhouse useful: http://users.ox.ac.uk/~peter/workhouse/Whitechapel/Whitechapel.shtml It says the union had its own mortuary. nell

Two of my great grandparents died in London hospitals and were both buried in Streatham Cemetery. Kim

Tower Hamlets Family History archives are really helpful - google them and send them an email or phone them.

There is the East London Cemetery at Manor Park. Opened 1872.

mine that died in whitechapel and shoreditch were burried at abney park cemetary in stoke newington, they have a good website with a searchable database of burials, it was for non conformists rather than c of e but its worth a try http://www*abney-park*org*uk replace * with . then click on the indexing project on the right hand side of the page
