marriage certificate

I just recently recieved a marriage certificate of my gt grandfather on it ,there is no age for him on certificate, but is the word file or it could read as full ,as its not very clear . Does anyone know what this means ? |

From the Useful Dates thread: 1929 - It became illegal for anyone under 16 to marry. Previously, girls could marry at 12 and boys at 14, although they needed parental consent until they were 21 Just to confuse matters, occasionally the bride and/or groom claimed to be of full age when they weren't. This meant they didn't need parental permission. Nobody checked it, so what they said went on the certificate! Lx |

thank you all that answered , so he could be any age between 14yrs and 21yrs , but it seems his parents knew as the mother has signed the certificate |

Full is sometimes written as 'of full age' - in other words an adult. Anne |

Full just meant that he was 21 years or older, but he could easily be 81 as 21, Full age was just to say he didn't need parental consent. |
