Could some kind soul tell me - Did people lie about being married on census returns? I can find no marriage yet daughter's birth certificate has the married name and mother's maiden name on it - could they lie about being married for purposes of the birth cert? I can find no marriage and think family reverted to mother's maiden name at some time after 1901. Is this possible? not sure legally (if anything) they had to provide to prove marital status. would be glad of your thoughts. thanks |

They could say anything they wanted to on a census return! Equally they could well have sat in front of the registrar when registering the births of their children and declared they were married at the time of the birth. No proof was required then or indeed now. |

II've got everything from outright lies to minor porkies on certificates and censuses. The daughter who was born 3 years after the death of her alleged father is proving particularly entertaining. She appears to be the result of her widowed mother's fling with a 19 year old lodger! Surnames and fathers names vary from census to census and from birth and marriages certs! I do enjoy a good scandal! Lx |

It's only 5 years ago that I filled in our 2001 census return. No proof of anything was required. When I got married I only needed proof of my address. The fact that something is an official document, whether a certificate, census return or other item, does not mean it is accurate or true. People have always made mistakes or told downright lies. My Norfolk grandfather used to say 'a fact is a lie and a half'. nell |

One of my rellies had 3 children before getting hitched, but all of the birth certs list mother as having dads name and her maiden name was listed, so yes they di lie about marriage. Bev |
