Merry Thanks for the info re freebdm non transcription in 1851, That explains why I couldn't make an appropriate match for his birth. I don't really know much about beta Ancestry but I will check it out Thanks again John of Balmain Sydney

Linda Thanks for the sympathy, but the funny thing is, I have found it is better to be chasing Jones (or Davies) in Wales, where you can find plenty of them, even if none of them belong to you, than to be chasing my paternal side by the name of Engle who are absolute mysteries despite the unusual name. Cheers John from Balmain Sydney

Q1 of 1851 hasn't been transcribed yet on FreeBMD. I looked it up on the Beta listings on Ancestry. I think these are still free to non-members of Ancestry??? Merry

Thanks Merry I had trouble finding the registration info for birth of Benjamin Jones in 1851 in Cardiff on freebmd, closest I could get was about 1848 which didn't add up. How did you do it? I will order that birth cert and chase up the marriage cert using her maiden name (with a bit of luck) Regards John from Balmain Sydney

Sympathies! I'm related to Evan Davies from Radnorshire (all of them probably) - they married Harriet Davies (most of them). Some of the Harriets are illegitimate.... Sometimes I wish my mother wasn't Welsh! L

Is it possible to pin down a birth reg for any of the children?? (suppose there are a lot to choose from?) If you can find one, then you will have the mum's maiden name. (hope it isn't Jones!) Merry

Looking for any tips or strategy to deal with a number of Jones getting married. My gg grandfather John Jones was born near Cardigan in Wales about 1816 and his wife Catherine also born in Cardigan about 1817. Their first child John Jones of course! was born about 1845 in Cardiff as was their subsequent children. I am trying to pin down their marriage details. Assumption 1 They were married between 1837 and 1845 Assumption 2 They were married in Cardigan Alternate assumption They were married in Cardiff Outcomes from Freebmd for Sep 1837 to Dec 1845 as follows Cardigan John Jones and Catherine Davies Sept 1840 V.27 p 43 John Jones and Catherine Griffiths Dec 1840 V 27 p 59 Cardiff John Jones and Catherine Evan Dec 1838 V 26 p 578 John Jones and Catherine Davies Mar 1842 V 26 p 435 Am I on the right track? Can I do anything to narrow the choice? Do I just start ordering the marriage certs. Any advice welcome John from Balmain Sydney
