Looks like they had an interesting journey if this was their trip... The Castle Eden has had a rather protracted passage, having been 115 days from Plymouth, in consequence of having carried away her three topmasts, with fore and main tops, on the 9th July last, during a very heavy squall north of the equator. She reports having exchanged signals with the barque Kinnear, from London to Hobart Town, in lat. 41S lon45E, all well. She has brought 302 immigrants, principally English and Scotch: consisting of 51 married couples, 63 single men, 50 single women, 44 boys and 37 girls under the age of fourteen. The Castle Eden is now the largest merchant vessel in harbouur, and is commanded by Captain Austin, late of the Pestonjee Boroanjee. Castle Eden 14th Oct 1848 London to Sydney |

About 4 months according to this account of a slightly later voyage: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb(.)com/~nzbound/castleeden.htm (remove brackets) By way of comparison, my mum went to Australia by boat in 1945, and it took 6 weeks. |

Hi, some of my relatives emigrated to Australia in 1848, onboard 'The Castle Eden' does anybody know roughly how long it would have taken them to get there. I have googled but haven't found a conclusive answer. Regards, Ruth. |
