I've been tracking a family thru the census and one of them has disappeared. I know that's not unusual but I can't find a death for her or a marriage. I'm wondering if she went abroad, is there any way of finding out? Cheers Carole xx

Carole, Don't give up hope - one of mine disappeared after 1861 census and didn't reappear until 1901, when he turned up with a german wife, a son born in Russia and two other children born in Germany! Another GR member has recently made contact, and she has a family memoir, referring to his employment in Odessa!! I spent years looking for a marriage or death (to no avail) and had begun to think that he must have emigrated. Jay

Jay How exciting! I think this is a tricky one, as I think I've found her in 1861 servanting for an Irish Gentleman, sounds very grand, I wonder what he got up to in his spare time! Carole xx

Gentleman usually just means retired, sorry to disappoint you. Well, to be exact, living off his own money without working for it, but usually it would be that he had retired and had enough investments to live off the income. Kate.
