I was just going to start a thread on that - Do you think it has anything to do with Ancestry putting on 1841??? They usually seem to co-incide with offers.? Dea x

I just received the e-mail about this offer, and I quote the following from the newsletter concerning the 1891 census, 'As with the 1861 census, we have transcribed more fields than any other online census, offering you the widest range of search options and increasing the chances of finding your elusive ancestor' Do they really have more fields than the Ancestry version? I have not used the census on 1837 for a long time but I don't remember it being particularly whizz bang!!!!

Ann - The main difference between the 1837 & Ancestry census indexes is that 1837 have transcribed the street addresses and occupations whereas Ancestry haven't. That is why they can claim to have transcribed more fields. Same is true for the 1861. Richard

Thanks Richard, I see now. I did not notice at the time as most of the people I am searching for are in one small village, and they did not tend to give addresses anyway, just the street if you are lucky, no number or house name!!!!

I don't think it is true that 1837 gives you the best chance of finding your 'elusive ancestor', though. If I am having trouble finding somebody I would try on ancestry rather than 1837. The search on 1837 is too restrictive despite what they say, and I have often found that when I put in a birthplace to search on their site it finds nobody but when I do track that person down eventually guess what - the birthplace will be what I searched for in the first place! Since the best way of finding 'elusive ancestors' is often to leave the name out or just use first name, approx. age, male or female, and the beginning of the birthplace and/or birth country with wildcard in, I say ancestry has the best search options for this. Kate.
