I have noticed in family history mags, that the Census is available to buy on disc, county by county. Could someone please tell me if there is any benefit in buying these discs. Is there any more information on them than is available ancestry.com? thanks |

The images you see on Ancestry are exactly the same as those on the discs. The advantage of discs is you can more easily trawl through a place to find ALL connections to your family - even those you didn't know about. You would not find them on an index. Another advantage is if you have a dial up connection to the internet. The page loading is very slow so discs would be quicker Having said all that, since I joined Ancestry I haven't used my discs much. Also have found rellies in far off places (eg London) who I would never have found otherwise. Anne Ps forgot to say one annoying part about Ancestry is that they haven't got the 'first pages' of each section - those showing the area covered by the ennumerator. This means that the full details of an institution are missing. Also you don't get to see the name of the ennumerator (which could be a rellie!) |

You can see the details of the area covered. You can choose each county for each census year manually - use the links across the top of the image page - for example... I'm looking at an image with: Search > Census > UK Census Collection > 1851 England Census > Norfolk > Yaxham > District 5 across the top. Click on 'Yaxham' and then choose the option of what the area covered - you get to see the first page of the listing. William |

Hi Judith, I bought mine before all the census were available on Ancestry that are there now, so I don't use my discs much at the moment. I have loads of family in one County and the discs are mine to keep forever. I suppose it depends if someone is happy to pay Ancestry each year while continuing their search for rellies. I'm on my 3rd year with Ancestry, but if all of a sudden I couldn't afford it anymore I will still have the discs. Best wishes Amanda |

Thank you William! I have been annoyed for ages about not seeing those first pages. A problem solved. Anne |
