this link is to a copy of the baptism cert that we have for my gg g/f. It was found in possession of a relative, we are assuming it is related and is our Edwin (why else would she have it?) I cannot find this entry in the Pallots or parish records, I know it won't give me anymore info than what we have. Any suggestions on where to go from here? No sign of him in the 1851/1861 census as brigham or Bryan (which is his name on marriage cert and following census). Oh 1889 does not tie into anything impotant that I can find, so don't know why it was taken then. suzie remove brackets www.penrithbaseballclub(.)com(.)au/Webmaster/Suzie/edwinbaptism.jpg |

Hi Suzanne I've had a look but, like you, found nothing about this person. Since the baptism certificate appears to be held in Australia perhaps the family went there before any census records. If he is your chap perhaps he came back to England. Do you know for sure that he changed his surname? The issuing of a baptism cert many years later could have been for identity reasons. It was just before birth certs so was the only evidence of age a person could produce. Anne |

Hi Suzanne What a super document to have! I wonder who calculated that Edwin would have been 25 in 1860. It would be useful to see if you could get hold of the regsiers of St Thomas, Oxford to see if any of Edwin's siblings were baptised there and whether the surname was Brigham in each instance. Looking at it, it would have been quite easy to have been mistranscribed. It's not much of a step from Brigham to Bryhan to Bryan. Hopefully, you can find the family in 1841, which may give a few more clues. It is possible that a family member died and Edwin needed to prove who he was to get an inheritance. Good luck in your hunt! |

The certificate is now in Australia coz it was sent to us when the relation died. The family itself did not come to Australia till 1950's way after Edwin died. In all the census I have he is known as edwin bryan. The problem is I don't even know if he had sibllings (there are a few possiblilites on ancestry) let alone whether john and eliza are his real parents etc and if they are what name did they go by later? |

Sorry Suzanne - I did not realise it was you who was in Australia. The difficulty is that St Thomas Oxford is not on the IGI (according to Hugh Wallis) so the only way to verify this entry would be to see the actual parish records. Obviously you'd have to get someone to do this for you! Sorry not to be of more help Anne |
