I am looking for the Birth of my Great Grandmother see below:

1901 census: Margaret Dixon age 23 (maiden name Bennell) 1891 census: Margaret Bennell age 13 born Brotton Yorkshire 1881 census:Margaret Bennell age 3 (mistranscribed as Bennet) Have looked on FBMD and 1837, but cannot find her birth. I am probably being stupid as usual. I worked out her year of birth to 1878, same as my Great Grandfather which i found, Any help greatly apreciated. Thank you I wont be able to reply till tonight as am about to go to work. xx

Hi Grumpy I think it might be Dec 1/4 of 1877 in Guisborough as there is a similar name on freebmd.rootsweb but ancestry shows wrong page so I cant check....ask someone with a credit to spare on 1837 or familyrelatives site? Suzanne

Havnt gone yet! will be late I,m sure: Have looked at 1837 December quarter 1877, and No Margaret Bennell, only 3 listed are Charles Wales Bennell, Florence Annie and Frances. Any more ideas? Thanks Suzanne (and anyone else who wants to help)... Ann x

Ann have you checked to see if she was born before her mother married and registered under her maiden name? I cant even find her on the census's. Georgina.

had a look, she was born in Henley, so not mine. My Margaret Bennell is down as being born in Brotton Yorkshire, She is the 2nd child on the 1891 census.

Hi Grumpy I thought I would do a check to see if I could find the births of Margarets siblings. The only ones I could find were Agnes born 2nd qtr of 1880 in Guisborough 9d 511 and Sarah Ann born 1st qtr of 1883 in Guisborough 9d 495. New Brotton where you say Margaret was born was only a tiny hamlet where they all lived. Guisborough was probebly the nearest town and registration centre. I`ll keep trying to find the others using variations of the surname. Keep your fingers crossed. Eileen

I can find no Margaret Bennell for that period on 1837 I looked either side of 1878 too ,except one born in 1879 died in 1880 Wakefield There are in Yorkshire 4 born Margaret Dixon though , Sept 1878 Stockton Sept 1879 Sculcoates June 1880 Darlington Dec 1880 Darlington good luck

Theresa that looks promising. I guess they could have spelled it wrong as she herself couldnt write, so assume her parents couldnt either. The funny thing is my mam said one of her sons (my dads uncle) used to make up a silly ryhme about 'Margaret Sophia, sitting on the fire', etc, so I will send for this one just in case.
