I have found the date of marriage on IGI of my Gt Gt Gt Gt Grandfather William Furber to Sarah Bristow - its says 21st June 1814 St Martin in the Fields Westminster. I tried to order a certificate but it said I cannot order certificates prior to 1837 - silly me not to know this. I was hoping to go back another generation with the help of the info on a marriage certificate - am I now scuppered ? Did they not have marriage certificates prior to 1837 ? If not, how do I get back further please ? |

No, before 1837 you have only parish registers in place of certs. You can obtain copies of these from the local records offices. They will not give as much info as a cert. For instance you wont get parents names on marriage entries but you may get a sibling or parent as a witness which will help give you a lead. Suzanne |
