I'm very new to all this - wondered if anyone can guide me in the right direction. Think I've found my ggrandfather William Stanford b.c1862 in both 1901 and 1891. Married to Alice (b. 1863), occupation Tin worker, living in Bethnal Green. They married in 1887 (am awaiting cert). In 1891, they have children William b.1889, and Alice b.1890. In 1901, Wm jn's age seems to be different (if this is the same person). It has him age 18. Alice jn died in 1901 along with 3yr old twins. Another sister, I found as a patient in the local hospital aged 8. My grandfather Robert apparently spoke of an elder brother that died, but I can't find a record of his death. Do you think this William is the same person on both censuses, with a mistake in the birth dates - or am I barking up the wrong family tree? Would be grateful for advice. Fran |

On the 1891 census, there are two Alice Stamford's. One married to William and one married to Frank. Both have sons called William. One of these Williams is 2 years old and the other is 11 years old. Have you found the right one in 1901? Kath. x |

It is always worth looking at FreeBMD or one of the other index to verify the birth of your William .... and also to look at the Deaths. The bmd index will also give you a second and third name - if they were so blessed - and though gthese are not always shewn on the cencuses it is worth looking at Deaths to see that he did survive. |

Could this be your family in 1901:- Ada E Stamford abt 1897 Middlesex, England Daughter St Pancras London Elizabeth D Stamford abt 1867 Middlesex, England Wife St Pancras London Elsie M Stamford abt 1900 Middlesex, England Daughter St Pancras London Ernest G Stamford abt 1895 Middlesex, England Son St Pancras London Mabel F Stamford abt 1891 Middlesex, England Daughter St Pancras London William Stamford abt 1866 Hampshire, England Head St Pancras London >>>William Stamford abt 1889 Middlesex, England Son St Pancras London Although the wife is transcribed as Elizabeth D Stamford, on the image it says Elizabeth A. Stamford, so the middle initial could stand for Alice. If it is the family, then the daughter Alice who was 1 in 1891 must have died. Source information: RG13/133 Registration district: St Pancras Sub-registration district: Regent's Park ED, institution, or vessel: 16 Folio: 59 Page: 47 Kath. x |

Thanks all for your help. Am sure that I've got the right family in 1901, as that double checks with address on my grandfather's birth cert . 1891 however... Although - occupation of William Sn on both is tin worker, so I'm hopeful I'm on the right track. Am off to work now, which is annoying as I've obviously got much more important things to be doing. A serious trawl through the BMDs is in order. Probably have to get certs to confirm whether I've got right child. Will however have to take up smoking (see other thread) as this could get to be an expensive hobby! Regards Fran x |
