I would welcome advice on where I could look for my grandmother's brother, Maurice Gasson. He was born in LLangwm(LLangum) Pembrokeshire in 1898 & is evident in the 1901 census. However, after this I have no trace whatsoever. It's possible that he may have emigrated - only a hunch because if I google the name - there is a Maurice Gasson in New Zealnd - the only one I can find!! How do I get NZ records - immigration , death or census. Any tips gratefully received, Shân

Don't assume he emigrated just because you found a name on the internet. Have you traced any siblings? Have you looked for his death/marriage in the GRO indexes? nell

I have looked in Ancestry.com for marriages & deaths but I don't know whether I'm missing something - but I can't find him. The trouble is that I know nothing about him - I have found his brother's naval records but maurice is very illusive. When you don't know the date of a marriage or death how can you narrow a search cos when I enter Maurice into Ancestry search it comes up with names like Gaskin to gerrard & everything in between?

If you are just searching Ancestry generally you won't find him, as they take their info from Freebmd which stops at 1910. You need to go to the England & Wales beta bmd list, and search each quarter of each year, which is why finding bmds in the 20th century is so time-consuming. If you don't have any idea if he married, or when or where you are talking about decades of searching, with at least 4 pages per year to check. BTW if you are getting odd names coming up, you are probably not searching on Exact Names, but Ranked Search. Click the appropriate tab at the top of the search box. nell

Thank you for your help - I think I may have found a death record on Ancestry.com. I'm going to be mean & ask someone to look it up for me!! Once I clicked on the exact search a Maurice Gasson appeared.
