I had a problem finding the name WELLS and eventually found one under the name WILLS and another under MILLS - when the W is written in fancy writing it can look like an M - also the dot on the ' i ' is sometimes missing or the ' e ' looks like an ' i ' but with no dot. So now I think about how the names could be mis spelt.

Hi Margaret Someone found that the W had become H or H become W. I'm not sure if that was from handwriting or speech/accent. Heather

I've found that S and T are often confused and also (surprisingly!) C and P. nell

V becomes B I'd guess that someone couldn't pronounce V. Heather

One of my ancestors called Conner was documented as Corner on his marriage certificate. Now I always think as you do. In the case of censuses, I also try to imagine my rellie 'saying' the name because lots were illiterate in those days and wouldn't have been able to give the correct spelling. It was probably a tough job for the ennumerator who only had what he'd heard to go by. No wonder this family tree lark is not for the feint-hearted. Aileenx
