This reminds me of the thirteen commandments thread. I'm sure there was one on there mentining family stories which were common knowledge until proved otherwise, then all knowledge denied. Thanks Georgina, it all makes sense. Well spotted, I wasn't even looking at Harry, I was looking for Henry's! I will ask the next question over the weekend, again, it will all need verification with certs, but I like to make sure I am heading in the right direction. |

Georgina, you are a star! As you can gather, there has been a bit of a family dispute, and I have always promised to try to settle this. I will of course get Christina's birth cert asap, but an extra pair of eyes have now found a possible marriage I had missed. Thank you xx T PS this ties in with a family story that Mary was orphaned and brought up by aunts in Plaistow. |

Perhaps she was a widow when she married - born Mary Robertson, married Mr Macintosh, who then died. But you won't know until you get a cert! jay |

The way to find out a woman's maiden surname is to either find her marriage cert or the birth cert of one of her children. You could find umpteen Mary MacIntoshes and Mary Robertsons on the census but you won't know whether or not they are the right woman without a cert. nell |

First of all, I would just like to say that I have been watching and reading these boards for the last three months, and the amount of help I have had from all the regulars on here is priceless! Just by being nosey I have found out where to look for certain things, been to sites I never knew existed, and learned a lot about the people on here too. So thanks to all those who freely give assistance to those who are new to this, or who have hit the many brick walls, figured out riddles when the answers can’t be seen for looking etc etc. I know one or two have been upset on here recently, but we are all grown-ups and able to take certain comments on the chin, so why don’t we and carry on enjoying what we do. Keep it up guys, because without you, I would have been lost a long time ago. Cheers xx Now to my questions. On my Dads side, I can’t figure out who my GGG Grandmother is. My Grandfather is Frederick George Henry Morse, born West Ham, 1912 His parents are William John Morse b 1886 d. 1949 West Ham, and Christina Mortlock, b. 1888 d. 1930. West Ham. They married in Dec quarter of 1906 in Poplar. Christina’s father, (according to my G Aunt, now no longer around to ask) is Henry Mortlock, and he married (again according to G Aunt) Mary Macintosh. I have found a Henry and Mary on the census (forget which one but not 1901) and it states that Mary was born in Liverpool. ….then brick wall. Now, my Grandfather always said the family name is Robertson, while his sister (said G Aunt) swore it was Macintosh. I can find Mary Robertsons born in Liverpool around the time I think I should be looking, but no Mary Macintosh’s. If anyone can find a small clue to point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Sorry it’s so long winded. |
