Well thank you Oz, just the sort of optimistic reply I am looking for! My research shovel is well used, but I do exceptionally value independant opinions. Bob

Thanks for the addresses....I'll draft a letter and send. as for the other I have extensively researched and by elimination only found two Thomas begat Thomas within four years of the 1824 date. The first was in Leicestershire, Sileby 1820. By viewing parish records and other means I have had to discount this one.... but this just across county lead is hot, the birth date is better 1824, the possible siblings have registrations searchable for after 1837. I also have this earlier Thomas's marriage IGI Parish record film on order. Bob

Oz, I had Mike with the Leicester thread completely run out of ideas almost a year ago. It seems Loughborough records are neatly tucked away at Wigston or securely secret with the L&RFHS. But.. I will google to see if there is a local Rempstone site. Bob

Kat gave me this group. For 1841 COOKE Thomas 55 ostler Thomas 15 Alice 10 William 7 Ann 4 Census 1841 TNA Ref HO107-0863 Image No 355 Folio No 21\11 Page No 14 Entry No 9 County NOTTINGHAMSHIRE Superintendent Registrar's District LOUGHBOROUGH Registrar's District LEAKE Enumeration District No 5 Parish REMPSTONE City Township Place REMPSTONE Household Number 1881 Seen the image and apparently the eldest Thomas is married to the next door neighbours daughter, her father an Inn keeper. In the 1851 census, the same district, the group has dissipated, hinting at a major upheaval or death, I find only William now 17, still at Rempstone as a nephew. Ann, now 13 is a servant, in St.Alkmund Derby, for both the enumerator has written where born... Rempstone Notts. Both perfect fits. The Eldest Thomas, Alice and the younger Thomas are nowhere to be found with any reference to birthplace Rempstone, but.... I have Thomas Cooke age 26 in Matlock with a wife & young family, the enumerator has his birth place as Loughborough Leicester! The forward history is proved, will the link I have described pass the viewers test, from researchers known and appreciated your votes and opinions please.

A big weekend posting for the Cooke challenge! Does Rempstone know which county it really belongs to? Situated in Nottinghamshire less than a mile inside the Leicestershire boundary and under three miles North from Loughborough. I have Googled the latest Rempstone Parish Councillors address and even now it has a Leicester, Loughborough postcode. For census purpose it has only one district, In 1851 it is described as within the Superintendents district of Loughborough. In the 1861 census, described as in the Ecclesiastical district of Lincoln. For me in 2006 this confusion is crucial, for people in days gone by, maybe not. My regular viewers will know that I have been try to pin down 1824 Loughbororough Thomas Cooke begat by c.1790 Thomas. My thanks in advance for participants, I’d love an early response from Jess!
