I have still not been able to get to grips with my Jenny problem. Jenny Wilkins b. circa 1873 married William Oates 1896 St Pauls Clerkenwell. John Henry Wilkins - deceased - publican. is named as her father on marriage cert. Found John H Wilkins cellarman on 1891 census in Clerkenwell married to Eliza and living in Compton buildings. (Jenny and Williams first son is born in Compton buildings in 1896 so I am sure of this connection.) Problem: 1891 census Jenny is recorded as Jane I know that Jane and Jenny are quite often interchangeable so this did not phase me however 1881 census shows Jane's surname to be Greydon (neice) I have found that Eliza's maiden name was Gradon but do not know who Jane's parents are I would send for the birth cert but cannot find record of Jane Gradon being born. I would appreciate any ones input as I do not know what I should do next. Many thanks Tracey

When did John Henry Wilkins marry Eliza? Was it before or after Jane/Jenny's birth? Heather

How do you know that the Jane on the 1881 is the same person? Could she not be a different person who really was a niece of Eliza, and your Jenny was elsewhere, maybe in service?

Don't want to put a spanner in the works but she could be Eliza's daughter born out of wed lock and niece put down to save face - they did things like that. Have you tried looking for Greydon, Graydon - I have an ancester and their surname has been mis spelt no less than 6 different ways. DAL
