Hi, Sorry if this is wordy but I'm very confused and frustrated. I'm having trouble tracing a family through the census's. I have a man Bernard Manning Browne (b. abt 1809 London Middlesex) married to Caroline (b. abt 1816 London Middlesex) They have 3 children: 1. Emily C (b. abt 1842 Chudleigh Devon), 2. Maria C (b. abt 1844 Chudleigh Devon) 3. Charles (b. abt 1838 Chudleigh Devon). All this I found on the 1851 Census. On the 1861 Census i found them all but Charles. Bernard and Caroline alone, the girls with their grandfather. Bernard died 1872. I've found an 1881 census with: Caroline Browne WID (b abt 1816 London Middlesex), Emily Rogers MAR (b abt 1842 Chudleigh Devon), Robet Rogers (b. abt 1870 Brighton Sussex), Arthur S Rogers (b. abt 1875 Brighton Sussex). No idea where or who Mr Rogers is. I've found an 1871 census that follows: Catherine Brown abt 1817 London, Middlesex, England Mother Tor Moham Devon Edward Brown abt 1811 London, Middlesex, England Father Maria C Brown abt 1843 Chudleigh, Devon, England Sister Edmund Radgos abt 1867 Brighton, Sussex, England Son Robert D Radgos abt 1870 Brighton, Sussex, England Son Emily Rodger abt 1842 Chudleigh, Devon, England Head I know spelling can be optional ie Browne/Brown, Rogers/Rodgers but could the census takers confuse Bernard with Edward and Caroline with Catherine. The professions for Edward/Bernard are the same. Any ideas are greatly appreciated Thanks Toni

Hi Toni Have you looked at the original scan? I have been using Ancestry and have found that when I click on 'view record' and get the list of the people in the household, the transcriptions have been completely wrong and not at all what is on the actual scan of the page. Hope that makes sense! Andrea

Jess, Thanks for that I had typed it in more like that but didn't check how it appears. I did check the original scan on Ancestry and unfortunately the names are what I have typed above. I've corrected the transciption errors on here. Toni

If everything else matches up - year of birth, profession, place of birth etc, I would probably run with it. There are a lot of mistakes made on these census forms. I bet there is not a single person doing their family tree that has not come across a major botch up somewhere along the line. It's part of what makes it soooo much fun!! lol Good luck. Hope it works out for you. From another person who is also having difficulty cos of botch ups!!

Quick scan of 1861 for browne/brown shows no edward/catherine. funnily enough all edwards I thought were possibilities were unmarried or married to Elizabeths. Toni
