Does anybody know where I can get information on wages. My g g grandfather left £50 to one of his grandsons in 1917. Sounds like a lot of money to me! Sheila

I was recently researching life during WW1 and found out that a wife of a soldier would only be getting around fifteen shillings per week to live on!! When a soldier completed his service they were granted a bounty of up to £50 - which to them was quite a lot of money. So, you can see that being left £50 in 1917 was definitely a large sum of money.

Sheila, Athena, My great grandad used his Bounty after the war to buy shares in the steel works, he never had to work again, when he died in 1946 he left it all to his 13 children and they each recieved the sum of 582 Pounds 4 shillings and 2 pence

Thanks everyone. As I suspected - a lot of money. Must have set him up for life. All I need to do now is figure out who this grandson is cos he's one I'd never heard of! More questions than answers Sheila
