Karen That's interesting. No whitesmiths in my family, but my grandfather WAS a blacksmith. He was apprenticed to the village blacksmith whose great-great grandfather was my grandfather's great-great-uncle's godfather! Granddad joined the army as a blacksmith just before the 1st WW, but when he left the army he became a lorry driver as cars were fast replacing horses and his letters describe one transport manager selling all his horses to buy lorries. Granddad did lots of work during the depression - farm labouring, shoe repairing etc but he did get to use his blacksmith skills making a pair of wrought-iron gates. nell
