On my grandads marriage certificate his name is William Collins aged 22 and a mariner. His father is down on the certificate as William Frederick Collins, Plumber, Deceased. I have found William Frederick Collins and his family on the 1881c and the 1891c, but my grandad William does not appear on the 1891c with his parents. I realise he could have been staying somewhere else at that time. The problem I have is that on the 1881c William Frederick has a son called William F Collins aged 7. I know it is common to have children with the same name but I thought that this would be if one child had died. I have searched and searched for a death of William F Collins between 1881 and 1886 but cant find one. Have I gone wrong somewere or has the family named 2 children William. Has anyone any suggestions ( They were living in Liverpool on both census) This is not the only problem I have with this family but if I can sort this one first maybe I will be able to sort the others ( if not I will be back on here, Ha Ha ) Going on school run and to make tea I will be back in a couple of hours. Thanks Jayne |

On the 1881 I found two James's with my grt grandparents & family one was aged 3 and one aged 1, I assumed it was an enumeration or transcription error. But NO they named their two youngest sons James Herbert & James Joseph. I bet they called the boys by their second names on a day to day basis. |

Confused - so am I?! When did William get married giving his age as 22? Have you calcuated his birth date as 1886 from that? Could he have been lying about his age on his marriage cert? Kate. |

Hi Heather The date of their marriage was 27th June 1905 Hi Kate I calculated by his marriage certificate that he would have been born between June 1882 and June 1883. During my research I have found that members of my family were not always honest about their age ( even my dad didn't put his real age on his marriage certificate.) So I have just got into the habit of researching a couple of years either way. Jayne |

Well, I have to ask this - are you certain that you have found the right William Frederick on the censuses? And have you found any of the family on the 1901? Kate. |
