It could be anything. Here is the definition of journeyman: 'Journeyman A man who served his apprenticeship in a trade and worked as a fully qualified employee. The term originated in the regulations of the medieval trade guilds; it derives from the French journée (‘a day’) because journeymen were paid daily. Each guild normally recognized three grades of worker – apprentices, journeymen, and masters. As a qualified tradesman, a journeyman might have become a master with his own business but most remained employees ___ I have journeymen in my family, some were plasterers and some were shoemakers, amongst otherthings. A ''B Shoemaker'' if it's written on the census, will refer to Boot. All shoemakers were subsequently catagorised as Bootmakers for the purposes of Government statistics. Merry |

Well that's put me right. I've one who is a joiner and, as he pops up all over the place, I'd assumed it meant a travelling 'whatever' who went where the work was available. Thanks for the question and thanks for the answers. Bill |
