My GGGGrandfather, Edward Ford, appears on 1861 census with wife and 2 of their children living in Salford, Lancashire. In 1871, his wife Esther is living in Salford with son and family and is a widow. Edward was born in Ireland c1797. He was still alive when son, Patrick married in June 1863. Why can't I find his death anywhere between 1863 and 1871? Any advice please. Lynne

How do you know he was still alive when his son married?? If it's because it doesn't say dec'd for him on the cert, that could be because the son wasn't asked and didn't proffer the info that his father was dead! If, on the otherhand, dad was a witness at the wedding..................! Merry

Have you trawled through the quarters in the GRO indexes or just searched FreeBMD? I am just asking because I know that FreeBMD has quite a lot of the 1860's still to do. By the way, he could have died before his son's wedding, I have some marriage certs where I know the father had already died but it doesn't say 'deceased'. Kate. P.S. If an Edward Ford was a witness at the wedding, it could have been some other relative with the same name!

Are you thinking that he was alive because he wasn't recorded as deceased on the son's marriage cert? Was he a witness? Perhaps he had already died. When my grandmother married, her father had been dead nearly 25 years but he is not recorded as deceased on the marriage cert. .....OK...Merry types faster!

Merry, Kate, Gwyneth Yes it is because he isn't recorded as deceased on the marriage cert. I didn't relaise that he may have been dead by then. June Yes, I found that one but discounted it because of the above. Maybe I should take a chance and send for it. Thanks everyone for your advice. Lynne
