First step is to read the ''getting started'' section on this site - click on the link from the home page. Richard

Welcome! Start with what you know and work backwards. If you have your grandparents birth certs, that should be able to take you back to 1901 (hopefully!) when the census' are available. Get yourself a subscription to Ancestry too, thats invaluble

Yes, read the getting started to get an overview. Then check out the sites you need to visit. I keep getting the impression from newbies lately that they think this is the only site they need to find a tree - thats not so Im afraid, this is just to help each other with queries and look ups. Ancestry sub is absolutely essential - about £55 a year and cheap at the price for census info from 1901 - 1851 and shortly 1841 plus all the births, deaths and marriages references you will need for buying certificates at the GRO for £7 each. And lots of other goodies that you will want to use as you get to know your way round. Then theres familysearch.org and freebmd and GOOGLE - never underestimate the info you can find by googling. Oh and do as I did, read every thread on these boards - even if they dont mean anything to you now you will be collecting information that will help in the future. So, start from yourself, then your parents, then your grandparents and backwards. Ask every relative you can for information and any certificates, births, marriages and deaths they already have. Write it all down and see what info you need next.
