Can anyone tell me how to get the inmates of west ham workhouse 1901. I have a subscription to ancestry. I have The family of Jesse and Jane Ann Tinton who have dissapeared and think that I have better check the workhouses just in case. Thanks Tracey

If they are in the workhouse in 1901 then a normal search on Ancestry using their names, should bring them up. Kath. x

I have tried that, however tinton is spelt wrong so many times i.e. viton, linton, sinton, that I thought it best to try. Probably a stab in the dark. Tracey

When was Jesse born? There is a Jesse Tinton in Poplar in 1901, born about 1961. Kath. x

Although West Ham is in London it used to be part of Essex, so the Records Office in Colchester may be able to help. Essex Record Office Wharf Road, Chelmsford CM12 6YT. Telephone (01245) 244644 ero.enquiry@essexcc(.)gov(.)uk If you are talking about children, they may not have been on site at the workhouse but placed with one of the Poor Law schools. Also try Stratford Reference Library, London E15

Also.... For what it's worth I searched all over the place for an ancestor in 1881 only to find her in a smallpox hospital miles from home. There were several epidemic outbreaks and the government set up a stunningly efficient system of care, even using decomissioned warships as floating hospitals along the Thames at Dartford. Those Victorians were impressive administrators.
