As some of you know, I am a bit strapped for cash at the moment and can't get any certificates, but

I had a lucky few finds recently on the familyhistoryonline with marriage details that cost me 10p (which I'd paid some time earlier) instead of £7. Today I was idly looking for a marriage for my husband's gt gt grandfather William Ledger. The only likely one was with Emily Mullins in 1878, but I was a bit doubtful as it was registered in Romford and I knew that they'd always lived in the St Martins/Covent Garden area of London. Anyway, I thought I'd see if I could find Emily Mullins in the previous census, in case some of her siblings' first names rang bells, or there was another clue. Well, I got Emily and found her dad was a greengrocer called Henry in 1871. Emily and William's first son (husband's gt grandfather) was called Henry William Ledger and he was a greengrocer. This looked quite promising. I went back to the 1861 census, family still in the same area, but different address. I was checking to see how many other households lived at the same address as I like to get a feel for the neighbourhood and found the household immediately above the Mullins' included a Letitia Bethell. Now Letitia Bethell isn't that common a name and I checked her age - sure enough, she is the Letitia Bethell who became William Ledger's stepmother in 1870 and is therefore Emily's stepmother-in-law. Fairly certain that this IS the Emily I want and am now wondering why they married in Romford!!! nell

Forgot to add that Emily as married woman always said she was born in St Martins and good old - and free - familysearch had a baptism for Emily Mullins with her birth date as well as baptism date in St Martins in the Fields, father Henry Abraham Mullins and mother Mary Ann. Jubilation!

Oh dear Nell, sorry, I was rather selfish then wasn't I ! That makes me feel a bit better though, that I'm not the only one with brick walls. Frustrating, aren't they! :-)

Oh, well done Nell,................. i am in the same situation,I've been skint since xmas and have a birthday to buy for almost every week during Feb/March/april, so i have sort of put big searches on hold. Until last week i was browsing through free BMDs and came across my gg/grandfathers marraige, i had looked before but not seriously as i believed they married in Ireland before arriving in England, and the thing that threw me was they had 5 kids before they got married, so i had to have that cert, its the missing link. Only problem now is waiting til the 4th April til it arrives..................Moe!

Nell - some of my Bristow rellies and ancestors married in strange places, and when I got their marriage certificates they all had the same vicar's name on them! It seems he was a family friend and they got married at whatever church he was at! Maybe you will find out the Romford connection was something like that? Kate.

June Thanks! | Glenys Don't worry. I've got plenty of brickwalls, missing ancestors etc too. Glenys The great thing about GR is we can celebrate our successes AND moan about our brick walls! Viv ♥ Thanks, hope you find your missing lot too, the scamps! Heather Positive ThinkerI Thanks. I'm sure things will be fine, they usually are! Moe Hope you can read the cert when it gets here!!! Kate How interesting. I've not heard of that before and I wouldn't have thought of it. When I get some funds I will get the cert and find out, perhaps. nell

Romford got a good very old market. Maybe they had a vegtable stall there, and thought they would pop in and get married while they were at it. There is a church in the market place called St Edward the Confessor Mo
