Some of several certificates ordered have arrived this week, first thank you to those who helped of late and confirmed transcriptions and registration districts. I now have the full birth set for the six children of my c 1824 Thomas Cooke and his wife Eleanor. Interestingly not only the movement of the family is worth noting but also the change of occupation for Dad. In 1846 for the birth of twins Aaron & Thomas then 1849 for David, he is a Butcher, (1851 Census has him as a Railway Carrier) in 1854 for daughter Betsy he is a Mail Driver, in 1858 for Arthur & 1861 for Robert he is an Ostler. (1871 Census has him as an Omnibus Proprietor). And on checking some of his childrens marriage certs, he is also a Cab Proprietor and a Horse Dealer! The perpetual quest for the origins of this man will of course be reported as research proceeds. Thank s again & Good hunting. Bob |

Bob He seems to have led a varied life! I found the baptisms of my grandfather and his siblings recently. Luckily the vicar recorded my gt grandfather's occupation in each record so I know roughly when he stopped being a fisherman and started labouring. This is useful as my dad always told me that gt grandmother didn't want any of her sons (she had 8) working as fishermen as she thought it too dangerous, following an accident in which a man and his sons were all drowned. nell |

Hello Jess, long time no speak, I'm still battling. Correct in Leicester, but, there is a Derbyshire, Rutland and now possibly a Notts connection. Damn that three county border! Did you see the latest lead I am chasing? The 1824 Thomas who persistantly lists as Loughborough birth in census, may have been Rempstone born, its a mile and a bit inside Notts just North on the road out of L'boro. Kat gave me a Thomas begat Thomas, plus others, 1841 census. From members info, it turns out that L'boro is the Church reg. dist for the town even though it is in Notts. I will be posting more as and when certs for a potential brother arrive and I have seen IGI parish film for the place! Best of regards to all, a PS for Gerri the Trying to Find for Cookes note I have posted gives a fair precis...so far. |
