The parties are Evelyn May GOADBY and John Jabez Thomas PICKERING. They were married in Leicester (my guess would be St Peters). Her father WILLIAM GOADBY is on the photographs. He died in the September quarter of 1945. The story goes that he allowed Evelyn a special dispensation to stay out until 10.30 on VE night, so presumably she was still unmarried and living at home then. I've been all through 1944 - 45 but can't find them in the register. Anybody got better eyes than mine this morning? Cheers Sheila |

I would just widen my search? when it comes to dates people are often out by 1 or 2 years and can be as far out as 3 and 5 years if you cannot find them after expanding your search then i would question the original info that i was given |

I would do normally, but I went to their silver wedding party in 1970! Sheila |

If you have the dad's death cert and you are sure you are looking at the right wedding photos and he is definitely on them (and I'm sure you are right!), then at least you have a certain cut off point for the marriage. Some entries do not appear in the GRO indexes, mistakes do happen!! Three ideas: 1) contact Leicester Reg Office and see if they will do a search of their registers for the period in question. They MAY do as you are fairly certain of the venue. 2) If they won't look over a wide time frame then the other option would be to see if the original marriage register has been deposited at the County Record Office. If it has, then maybe a lookup could be done there. 3) if they haven't got the register, it might still be at the church, so you would need to contact the church warden. Is there anything in the photos to help you with the venue? (to be certain of the church, I mean??) Merry |

Yeah and we both addad the letter 'S' to Goadby. Actually several pages for Goadby seem to be read as Goody/Goodby,maybe the image reader is struggling just as much as we are LOL Glen (4th bash at my name damn fingers!!!!!) |

Thanks chaps - now I understand why I couldn't see it. My Auntie Ev was born in May 1901 (just missed the census) so when she had her special dispensation to stay out until 10.30 pm on VE Night - she was 44 years old. How times have changed! Thanks again Sheila |

It's possible that the special dispensation was in fact for the end of the First World War?! |
