I have the name of my GG Grandfather as Peter Nelson Bigelly he was on the marriage certificate of my great grandmother, as her father, that someone on genes reunited looked up for me. The trouble is that I can find no one of that name anywhere. The marriage was in the 1850's 1860's or 1870's I think, in India. Any help that can point me in the right direction would be very, very welcome. Thank you Teresa |

You are looking for a man in India over a span of 30 years? have you looked in the overseas bmd records? I suggest you check your records and see when this wedding someone looked up for you took place and also where. The name of Peter's child would help too. nell |

You have a problem. If his child was married in the 1850's he was born in the 1830's or earlier ie pre 1837. Where? Good luck Keith Heather - yes, you can using the Overseas Section of 1837online. I've just done one. |

I think the overseas index just gives you the ref you need to order the cert. nell |

Try contacting the Military records dept, he could have been over in India with the Army. My great grandmother and a couple of siblings were born in India around that time. Her father was in the Army |

If someone on GR looked up the marriage and was able to see the father's name and the event was in Asia, I can only imagine they were looking on the IGI???? But there are no entries at all for ''Bigelly'' (with that spelling) and when I googled, it only said it's the name of a place in Pembrokeshire!! Merry |

Thank you all so much for your replies. I've found the information that I have already and will tell you all I know. The facts that I have were given to me on the India-L board by Donald. My great grandmother was called Ester Chunder and she married Adolpus Hoogstraten on 4.5.1865. in St. Thomas, Howrah. On the marriage certificate it says that she was a widow and that her fathers name was Peter Nelson Bigelly. I haven't got the MC only what Donald emailed me. He didn't say where he got the information from. No one in the family knew that she was a widow when she married. If this helps anyone to suggest some new places to look I would be very grateful. Thank you Teresa |

Hi Teresa I found this: Presidency of Marriage BENGAL Marriage Year 1865 Husband First Names Adolphus Husband Surname Hoogstraten Wife First Names Ester Wife Surname Chunder Comments 186511293 Transcribed by FIBIS Volunteers -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Source Information Volume Number 112 Folio 93 LDS Film Reference 499018 Source Name Marriage Indexes Source Year 1865 Source Presidency BENGAL Source Event marriages from this website: http://www.search.fibis.org It looks as if Chunder is an indigenous Indian name. Try searching for her father on the site. Bigelly may be an anglicised version of an Indian name. |

Thank you I went to the fibis board but could not find out anymore. Looks as though I'll never get any further. The only thing I can think of is to write to the church to see if I can get a copy of the marriage certificate. It might even have a web page ! Thank you for looking Teresa. |
