Hey, I wonder if you could help me please. I'm doing this research for my grandma and I'd be really grateful if you could please help me out, with any information you may have. I'm looking for information reagrding the surnames 'Hatton' and 'Stringer' from Stockport. My grandma's mum is called Ethel (nee Stringer) and her father is called Isaac (Hatton). They had seven children called Jack, Fred, Patricia (my grandma) May, Brenda, Jaqueline and Keith. Ethel had siblings named, Jane/Janie, Charles, Harry, Jenny, Bertha, William, and Annie. Any information you could give me would be really appreciated, as I would love to go far back as possible, and find out about my family, so that I can show my grandma. Thanks very much. KC.

Do you have the birth certs? What year was Patricia born, where was she born? I'll do a search for you and then you could order her birth cert with mother's maiden naem on and then order her parent's marriage cert with both parent's fathers on..

Do you have any idea of the years of birth of any of these people, even just a rough idea. Kath. x

The way KC has worded her request, (in the present tense) sounds like Ethel Stringer and Isaac Hatton may still be alive, in which case the Isaac born 1885 wouldn't be the one. I may be wrong about this though. Kath. x

I don;t think that Isaac and Ethel will still be alive - but i don; think that he waould have been born in 1885. Her grandmother is still alive.

Hey guys, and thanks loads for your replies. I'm afraid I got a few things wrong. Isaac and Martha (both Hatton) had children named Jane/Janie, Charlie, Harry, William, Annie, Ethel, Jenny and Bertha. I think Isaac was born c1860, I really dont know how old he was when he had his first child, so this is an educated guess, I'm afraid! Ethel then had seven children called, Jack, Fred, Patricia, May, Brenda, Jaqueline, and Keith. Patricia (My Grandma) was born in Stockport in 1936. I'm looking for the name Hatton, so please, please, please help me! Thanks very much!

Please read the 'Getting Started' section which you can find by scrolling down the homepage. After 1910 its quite hard to find people, you need to trawl through the GRO births, marriages and deaths indexes for each quarter of each year looking for likely family. Between 1837 and 1910 you can find lots of records on Freebmd (google to find). Before 1st July 1837 there was no civil registration, so you need to check parish registers. Many records can be found on www.familysearch.org Between 1841-1901 you can also find families on the census, which was taken every 10 years. Censuses and certificates can help to build a family tree. nell

Kc, everyone will try to help but you have to start at the beginning. Write down what you know going back from yourself. You have your grans birth certificate? When was she born? Where? Parents names and ages? You say Isaac is her father? But born 1860? thats nearly 150 years ago. Do you mean her grandfather? You have to keep going backwards from the facts you know, it becomes confusing if you try to do too much at a time. Ask Gran to give you all the info she knows and write it all down. Ask if she has any marriage or death or birth certificates. Get it all down in writing - make a little tree going back from you and then see what you know for definite. If gran has her birth certificate you can see both her parents names. You can then buy their marriage certificate and see grans grandfathers name and occupation. You should then be able to start looking for people on the census.
