Hi there, I've found William Mabey on the census's born in Romsey Hampshire in 1840.... but when I searched the birth index's for 1839, 40 & 41to get his reference number but he doesn't appear to have an entry on the lists. How can I find him? I need to order his certificate! Any ideas???? Thank you all again!! x |

The trouble is, many births (and to a lesser extent deaths) were not registered until fines were brought in for those who didn't, in 1875. Have you got him on the 1851 census? You may have to treat him the same as if he had been born before civil reg! Merry |

You could try a few more years or alternate spellings. |

It is quite possible his birth was never registered, in the early days of registration days many people failed to register births. You may be better off looking for his baptism if you know where the family were likely to have been living. Jennifer |

Dad was born at Nursling, which is only a couple of miles from Romsey. I wonder if the children were taken there for baptism?
