Hi, I have seen a census that shows my ancestors, in 1881 it says Francis Illsley is the head, and Robert Illsley (though it is spelt Issley on the census) Is Father, so presumably this would be Francis' father, right? Only when I search earlier censuses I can't find Francis and it shows his wife (i think) as a little girl, with her dad as Robert Illsley! I understand that the spelling of the surname doesn't matter too much as this may have been done by people who weren't sure how to spell it. What I want to know is, why can I not find some of my ancestors? Is it just that some of the censuses are not online, or accidentally omitted, obviously it was one heck of a job to type it all up!! I have tried various spellings of the surname, but to no avail, so could it just be missing? Thanks |

Sometimes, when a father was at the house, he is down as Father, when it should be Father-in-law. Since they're married, Father could be for either person, but is usually the Head's father. |

Hi Deborah To answer why you can't always find rellies in the census, If it were the odd rellie here and there they may not have been present in the house at the time. If it's the entire family the record may be missing,or they could have been mistranscribed. I have a Chambers family who on the image suddenly turn into 'Gresham' for one census. You sometimes have to be imaginative with what was said, what the enumeroter thought he heard and what he recorded. Local accents often caused confusion and it also depends who in the household gave the info. Some rellies always seem to be consistent with the yaer and place of birth and others may suddenly be a few years out with year and place,(maybe 20 miles or more if it's a rural district, they suddenly decide they were born in the biggest town in the area. Not much help i know, but if you post a few details perhaps someone may be able to pick up a few possible matches. Looks like they already have Glen |

thanks for the replies everyone, I had to trawl through to find this!! I have the same info that has been on here, the only thing I'm worried about is the marriage, I have given the number 1 instead of 0 on the end I think!! Perhaps I ought to ring them just in case I don't want it to come back they can't find it! The family of all Frances/Francis Illsley's, I don't think is mine, but I will check it out, many thanks again, Deb |
