Adoption question

I have found this man 'Stephen Jhn Birch' on FreeBMD ( BetaVersion) April 1953 and i know he was later adopted. Could i safely assume that this would be his birth name? Also he had a brother and sister who were older than he was. The brother was known as Joseph Ascott and i cant find a birth under that name or Birch. Could i be safe in assuming that Ascott was his adopted name? There is something not right with this family but i cant put my finger on it. (This is a friends family so i have very limited information on them). Jane

If the name you found was on the GRO Birth Register, then that would be the name at birth. If the child was subsequently adopted, their new name would be entered onto the Adopted Children's Register, NOT the Birth Register. The original birth entry would remain unchanged. I hope this clarifies things for you. Liz

Personally i wouldn't assume anything! Your research needs to be based on fact not assumption , especially anything as sensitive as adoption issues jess
