Sorry for the delay in reply Merry, just got in from work! Yes that is the family in 1881.Elizabeth J is in hospital and Samuel is deceased in 1876. I also find the older children a mystery as this would have made Elizabeth 14/16 and Samuel 13/15 when William was born!! interestingly William seems to disappear after 1871 although it is possible that I am missing him because there were so many of them. Thanks for the second pair of eyes on Elizabeth Daugh. I have put down both 2 and 7 months as I couldn't quite decide. If you look at 61 there are a couple of Samuels and a couple of Elizabeths of which one set are brother and sister. Quite a puzzle, these common surnames are a PAIN aren't they? Glad the little ones better. Thanks again for your input. |

I would try for Elizabeth J Thomas who was aged 7 months in 1871. You said she was 2 months, but I think she's 7 months!!! UPDATE: If John Thomas was born Oct 1871, then she must be 7 months, noit 2!! The 1871 was taken on 2nd April so Elizabeth was probably born August Sept 1870. This means she should have been registered Q3 or Q4 1870. There are two Eliza Janes in Q4, but no Elizabeth Janes. Then there is this Elizabeth Jane in Q3 (which is the more like Q in any case!): Births Sep 1870 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Thomas Elizabeth Jane Redruth 5c 240 I would go for that one first! Maybe specify the father's name (but not the mum's surname, just in case!). It might be best to try Redruth Reg Office rather than the GRO? Good luck Merry |

Those two older children seem old for the parents! Are these the children in 1881? Edith THOMAS Head U Female 18 Redruth, Cornwall, England Housekeeper Samuel THOMAS Brother Male 15 Redruth, Cornwall, England Tin Miner Elizabeth THOMAS Sister Female 12 Redruth, Cornwall, England Scholar John THOMAS Brother Male 10 Redruth, Cornwall, England Scholar Mary THOMAS Sister Female 8 Redruth, Cornwall, England Scholar Ellen THOMAS Sister Female 5 Redruth, Cornwall, England Scholar The ages don't match up exactly, but I don't see the above family featuring in the 1871, except your family group. My son is quite a lot better this morning, thanks. He came in at 7am and said, ''Look, my sick bowl is still empty''!! (he's 6) LOL Merry |

I think you may be right Merry. Hope the little or not so little one OK. I will contact the local office as there were several Williams born around the same time as mine give or take the two years for census age as opposed to birthday, and see what they can come up with. Many thanks for your input. Pmaid |

Hmmm.....I haven't looked hard because I have a sick child upstairs....but if this was my tree and I was stuck, I would probably buy the birth cert for one of the other children.......in case there had been some misunderstanding with names at the registrars....it does happen! Merry |

On the 1871 census, did they have any children already? Maybe you could post their details? Merry |

My Brickwall. I have the birth certificate of my GT GT grandfather John THOMAS b Oct 1871. Father Samuel THOMAS Mother Elizabeth Jane THOMAS formerly THOMAS From 1871 census onwards I have them no problem but!!! They were born in c 1844 and 1845 respectively. I have searched 10 years either side of John's birth for a marriage with no joy. and I have searched 61 and 51 census matching ages etc and have come to the conclusion that they were possibly brother and sister. Now would a brother and sister hiding the fact, say she was formerly THOMAS on the birth cert? Or can anyone think of anything else to try? This all occurs in Redruth Cornwall by the way. Any help gratefully received. Pmaid |
