As everyone here seems to be a fan of ancestry I thought it might be useful to start a thread asking which features of the site you use. Personally I find the shoebox where you can save records invaluable. |

''Find Ancestry members who share your research interests'' or these: ''My Ancestry'' ''Family Trees'' ''Ancestry Community'' Merry |

After looking at a record it will ask if you want to save it to your ancestry. You then have the option of attaching it to a person or saving it to your shoe box. I only have a very basic tree on ancestry so I can store census images etc. without having to waste ink printing them. Also useful if you find a reference to an unusual name which you think might belong to you but you can't fit it in yet. Yesterday I found Selina Beckingsdale who I expect is the daughter of the one i want but no proof yet. |

Jeanette, You can easily delete people from your shoebox. Click on My Ancestry. Scroll down to Shoebox and then click the red X. Best Wishes Mary |

Diane, When you have a image on the screen and you click the icon to save it, you get the option of save to Your Computer or My Ancestry. If you choose My Ancestry you then get another box that says Save to Shoebox or save to People I'm looking for. When you want to see what you have saved in your shoebox, from the home page click on the tab that says My Ancestry, scroll down and there is your shoebox items. Hope that helps Mary |

So, is saving to Shoebox the same difference as saving to a specific file on your computer?? Merry |

Merry, I think the point of it is that if you find someone but your not sure it's the right person , you save it in your shoebox so that if later on you find out that they are your family than you dont have to search for them again. Even though you can save anything you find to your hard drive in the normal way, you have then got to remember where you saved it when you realise that you want it. And if your like me you forget you have saved it, you end up searching all over again, not only that but if I find they are the wrong family I forget to delete them from the hard drive. I find it quite convenient to put things in the box, so that anything I'm not sure about, no matter which branch I am working on I know that they are all in the same place. Mary |
