Does anyone else have an ancestor called Birdie - is a proper first name or, as I suspect, a nickname or an abbreviation for a longer name? Thanks.

Bridie was always an Irish name. But Birdie? I know mum had a friend called Biddy. As she was born in India, wonder if it has any sort of connotations to colonial living?

Hi Diane. I had an aunt Bertha who was known as Birdie. by the way I notice you have Indian familly connections. By accident I came accross this site a few minutes ago http://www(.)sumgenius(.)com(.)au/index.htm It is quite a good collection of Anglo-Indian Famillies. Happy Hunting, Roger

I was at school in the 1960s with a 'Birdie', who was actuallly Kathleen. Just a nickname, but it described her tiny, bright and perky person extremely well. Perhaps you had an ancestress who pecked at her food or bobbed about like a little robin or jenny wren.
